Ton / Pound Units Definition
Ton
The ton (symbol t) is a unit of mass which is worth one thousand kilograms, or 1,000 kg1. We can also write: 1 ton = 1×103 kg. Sometimes, to distinguish it from other tons used in particular in the United States and in certain technical fields, it is called a “metric ton”. It is equivalent to 2,204.622,621,849 imperial pounds (lbs).The tonne appears in Table 8 of the SI2 brochure: it is not a unit of the international system (SI), but its use associated with the SI is accepted because of its important practical role.
Pound
Pounds, now used in the United Kingdom and the USA, are equal to 453.59237 grams, and are divisible into 16 ounces (oz) or 7000 grains (gr). There is also another unit of measurement between grain and the ounce used in the USA - the drachma (dr), there are 16 drachmas in a single ounce. The Drachma is not used in the United Kingdom.
In the UK, a person is usually weighed in stones (st) and pounds. One stone is equal to 14 pounds. There is also a unit that is twice as large as a stone - quarter (qtr), which is equal to 28 pounds. The stone and the quarter are not used in the USA.
