Perche2 / Are Units Definition
Square perche
A square perch (often shortened to just a perch) is a unit of measurement and is equal to 25.29285264 square metres. Confusingly, a perch (not the squared
variety) is also called a rod or pole because it’s based on a surveyor’s tool
measuring exactly 5½ yards or 16½ feet or ¼ of a surveyor’s chain. The perch or rod was helpful tool and measurement for a surveyor because it could be used to create a ‘perfect’ acre of 40 perches by 4 perches – remember 160 perches equals an acre.
Are
Are, unit of area in the metric system, equal to 100 square meters and the equivalent of 0.0247 acre. Its multiple, the hectare (equal to 100 ares), is the primary unit of land measurement for most of the world. The are was the basic unit of area when the metric system was first decreed in France in 1795. When the International System of Units (SI) was adopted in 1960, the square meter replaced the are as the unit of area, but the International Bureau of Weights and Measures accepted the hectare as the common unit that can be used with the SI.
